GOG includes the classical versions when you purchase the EEs, I think. And if there are bugs it'll be hard to figure out what's wrong if you're not familiar with the game.

I recommend playing without mods though, as many require some knowledge of the game to decide what you want, different difficulties, changes to existing classes, etc. Most popular mods also work for the EEs if you do want to mod.

If you're a new player, the EEs save you a few hours in sorting out mod load order and the installation itself. It's a shame they were cut, but as a veteran BG player, I think they're extremely minor. The change to the cutscenes are only in the first game, and was because they were extremely low quality when scaled up to modern resolutions. It's also easily skippable, but I enjoyed it and it's worth a play through at some point. Siege of Dragonspear is alright, but not great. Anything they add (new npcs, quests, etc) is all skippable. In my opinion, the EEs don't add anything super valuable, but they don't detract from the experience either. The general consensus from the Baldurs Gate community is that the EEs are the best versions. That said, check out this thread for more info.

When revisiting, you uninstall the widescreen mod, and then install any mods (readmes will normally have notes on the correct order) and then reinstall the widescreen mod last. I recommend, in either case, to leave mods until second or third playthroughs (the game warrants many). Run the game once, and configure it with BGConfig.exe (this must be done before installing the widescreen mod). Install the BG2 Fixpack (very important that it's the BG2 version!). (Alternatively, if playing both games, install BGT). Install Tutu (you don't need to patch, the GoG version comes patched). If you go for the originals, you will need to do this: If you go for the EE, you'll be pretty much ready out of the box. I personally play with the original versions, because I'm not too keen on the new additions, and, until recently, there was no analogue of the BGT mod, which fuses the two games.

I believe on GoG that if you buy the EE, you will also get a copy of the original version, so you can try them both out, if you want. Multiplayer with the originals, even on LAN, requires the sacrifice of firstborn children. If you have even the slightest desire to play multiplayer, the EE are mandatory. However, some of their new additions are not quite at the same level of quality as the original game (it is quite a high bar!). They are now pretty solid representations of the original games, with some lovely quality of life improvements. Lots of the bad reviews for the EE versions are either from release, when the game was buggier than the originals (this is now patched), or politically motivated, because of some dialogue in their expansion. If you play the originals, some light modding (like Tutu, or the Widescreen mod) is overwhelmingly recommended. TLDR Should I just play the game without mods, with Tutu, or just play the Enhanced Edition? So I've heard about this thing called Tutu which is supposedly a better mod for the original, that does a lot of what BeamDog did, but better. They even cut some of the important lines ("There are others! I can show you!"), removing a lot of the meaning. The new "motion comic" style intro is a sad excuse for a replacement of the original. And even if you purposefully avoid the new characters, you still have to deal with the removal of all the old FMV cutscene sequences.

They're basically mod NPC's, which, again, you can find plenty of for free if that's your cup of tea. The new characters simply do not fit in this classic game. This quote from a user on GoG really made me pause at playing the EE: There's a lot of negative reviews on GoG too. Just take a look at the top reviews on Steam. However, those versions have now been removed and you can only get the Enhanced Edition made by BeamDog now, which is reported to have instability, and a worse UI. My understanding is that originally the games were released on Steam and GoG in a regular version with some mods thrown in for things like screen size fixes.

First time playing Baldur's gate, but I've seen a lot of flak being thrown at the Enhanced Edition on Steam and GoG.
